grumpface [May. 7th, 2008|11:30 pm]

[Feeling | grumpy]

I..... am a giant grumpface.

i hate the world today, i really hated the world yesterday, and i will probably continue hating the world into tomorrow.

however. all is not gloom and darkness!

i am currently looking forward to:
-going hoooome and it being warm and playing with the brody dog and seeing the crew (i can't believe i just said that) and the arts & crafts day that i am going to make danielle have with me.
-going to cape town. duh. i got my letter for my visa yesterday from the treatment action campaign, and i got psyched all over again. i can't believe i get to actually go intern with THE treatment action campaign. words are not enough.

i will, however, miss berkeley. not the parts where graduating seniors get stabbed to death on frat row, mind - that's been kind of traumatic to deal with as a campus (i don't know how schools deal with shootings; this was one kid and the whole school is just devastated) - but my big comfy queen-sized bed, and living with my best friend, and celebrating 21st birthday parties, and LOST thursday nights with the "other" crew (there i went again), and knit and kvetch on friday afternoon at hillel where i do a lot more bitching than stitching, and and and. you get the point.

honestly, when did i get so attached to berkeley? i don't remember when it became more "home" than home.

ok actual update time [Mar. 24th, 2008|02:40 pm]

i got a little/super off-track in that last entry. oops. SO: a real update!

school: this semester is dragging me down. i love two of my classes, and i HATE two of my classes. like, really truly hate them. one of them could pass as an okay class if it weren't for the professor, but one of them is just a joke. i've never had a class of such low quality at berkeley before, and i hope to never have another one. the professors don't have PhDs, and it SHOWS. it's called "race, ethnicity, and health in america" and the moral of the class is: racism is the cause of all evil. white people are all the same - privileged, rich, and oppressive. poor white people don't exist (or matter)! students of color, look at how oppressed you are. yeah, spare me. racism is bad, it has obviously left its mark on communities of color in this country, but it is not the root cause of all problems faced by minorities. shut up. on the other hand, i LOVE my policy class - taught by robert reich (bill clinton's secretary of labor). he is a brilliant, engaging guy who just... aah. easily the best class i've ever taken at cal. oddly enough, the other class i'm really enjoying is my intro to econ class... it's kind of fun, in a sick, demented way (says the daughter of an economist).

work: nothing interesting happening in my current job, but i've got some interesting prospects for the summer. i should find out by tomorrow whether the human resources department at the clinton foundation (BILL clinton, tyvm) wants me as an intern there. that would be cool because it looks great on a resume - HR for the clinton hiv/aids initiative? hell yeah. cons: it's totally desk work. i'm also waiting to hear back from the treatment action campaign in cape town, which would be the best thing EVER. expect a very excited update if that comes through, because omg - that means a) going back to cape town and b) working with the TAC woohoo!

life: well, hmm. i turned 21. i suppose that is of note. drank way too much. roommate took care of me, bless her tiny little head. it was all very sparkly, from what i recall. trying to get around the bay area a little bit more this semester and next year, so that my time at berkeley won't have been completely wasted from a tourist point of view.

....hm. it is difficult to sum up one's entire life in a little box on a computer screen.

I am constantly struck by how warm and welcoming people are here. I am going to miss that a lot – everyone calls me “sister” here; everyone is sister and brother and mama, no matter what color you are or where you come from, and it makes me feel so incredibly a part of this whole world, this whole way of existing. And it’s everyone – I see Muslim women wearing headscarves and we smile at each other, I see black men with no teeth and we say hello, I see old white Afrikaner generals and they hold the elevator door for me; everyone wants to take care of me and make sure that I love their country as much as they do. And I don’t know how to assure them that I do, that I’m not just saying it to be polite, that I have fallen foolishly, madly in love with their crazy country – with its crime and its bureaucracy and its people and its streets and its minibus taxis and its smells and its townships and its insane wealth and with everything – and that I don’t know how I’m ever going to leave, or stay away.

If there is one thing a person should know about me, it is the following:

I do not do passive-aggressive. I do not deal with passive-aggressive. If you are trying to be passive-aggressive with me, I will call you out and force you to deal with it. I will confront you, and I will do so bluntly. You should never doubt my answer to a direct question, because I will always give you a direct answer.

If you ask a circular question, I might give you a circular answer.

Ask away.

In my reader for my International Political Economy class (emphasis added by me):

The dynamics of a bipolar system, moreover, provide a measure of correction. In a world in which two states united in their mutual antagonism overshadow any others, the benefits of a calculated response stand out most clearly, and the sanctions against irresponsible behavior achieve their greatest force. Thus two states, isolationist by tradition, untutored in the ways of international politics, and famed for impulsive behavior, have shown themselves - not always and everywhere, but always in crucual cases - to be wary, alert, cautious, flexible, and forbearing.

My comments on the side read:

H/D = OTP
US/USSR = OTP
They just wanna cuddle!
